Art 2 Change Workshops & Residencies
Silence Youth Violence
MYX’s 80-hour paid internship program examined the root causes of youth violence and explored poetry as an instrument of social change. Fifty 9th and 10th grade summer school students collaborated on a 14-track CD entitled “Young Voices Against Violence” with all lyrics and beats written entirely by the students. Students also performed tracks live during a free concert at the Rotunda. In partnership with the Philadelphia Youth Network. Click here to hear a podcast: Silence Youth Violence Podcast.
Female Gender Stereotypes in North America & South Africa
During this 5 week summer program, students used different forms of media to compare and contrast the ways in which female stereotyping negatively affects girls and women in North American and South African society, including eating disorders, job discrimination, date rape, and the spread of HIV/AIDS. The program culminated in the creation of a 10-foot x 7 foot positive female images quit which was donated in Cape Town Child Welfare, a grass roots organization in South Africa that aids children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. In partnership with the Philadelphia Youth Network

Feeling Feelings
One-hour weekly workshops were taught to the kindergarten and first grade classrooms at Franklin Elementary School in Philadelphia over a six-week period. Students studied conflict resolution and created a series of texture-filled boxes enabling them to relate to different emotions. In partnership with the Character Education Grant in the School District of Philadelphia.
Common Threads
One-hour weekly intergenerational workshops were taught at seven different nursing homes in the NewCourtland network over a 10-week period. Pairs of inner-city high school students and elders discussed their cultural commonalities, then collaborated on individual quilt squares on this theme. Quilt squares from all seven sites were eventually sewn into one large quilt and a companion “virtual quilt” with accompanying student and elder voice recordings was created on-line. In partnership with New Courtland Elder Services. Check out the virtual quilt: http://www.myxcommonthreads.org
